We evaluate each computer individually. Most infections can be resolved within hours while others can take a day or more to complete. The age of the computer and the number of files stored are contributing factors to how long it will take to return the computer to normal operation.
Depending upon the specific infection we will remove the hard drive and install it in one of our bench rigs. This allows us to scan for and remove the vast majority of infections without complication. Once the drive has returned a scan with no issues the drive is returned to the original computer.
With the drive reinstalled, we boot the computer in "Safe Mode" and use a variety of appropriate tools to scan and clean the remaining infections. Once the scans are clear we further optimize the system and install the security solution you provided or we will install a "free" version of a security suite.
There are occasions when the infection has corrupted the system so badly that there is no way to remove the infection. When this happens we can reinstall the Operating System returning the computer to a state similar to the time it was first turned on. Before we reinstall, we communicate with the you and attempt to save all data files on the drive. This includes documents, audio, video and image files. Once these files are copied to another drive or optical media we begin by wiping the drive with software to ensure that it is completely clean. After the installation of the Operating System, we perform all updates and enhancements.
Now, here's the important fact. Programs such as games, iTunes and Microsoft Word including Operating Systems like Windows XP, Vista and 7 can not be copied from one drive to another. This means that if we have to reinstall the Operating System, the customer must provide the original software and or Product Keys so we can install it. The original data-files such as the iTunes Music library, saved games data and Word documents will be returned to the computer. All retail computers and software have a Product Key. It is normally included on a sticker somewhere on the packaging, laptop or case. If the sticker has been lost, removed or the number is not legible you are responsible for providing a valid Product Key.
